A bedrock assumption in theories that explain and predict human behavior is people’s motivation to pursue pleasure and avoid pain. So why do people like watching scary movies? From our earliest days, we use our vivid imaginations to see ghosts in shadowy shapes, to be emotionally connected to the unknown and to fear things that are improbable. Their method could apply to other experiences that seem to elicit terror, risk, or disgust, such as extreme sports. While many screamed and some even fainted in cinemas at scenes of spinning heads and shaking beds, others simply laughed. It’s the season when people flock to horror films and haunted houses and pay money to get really, really scared.
