A mental disorder is a psychological or behavioral pattern generally associated with subjective distress or disability that occurs in an individual, consisting of a combination of affective, behavioral, cognitive and perceptual components. A major option for many mental disorders is psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is widely used. The underlying concept behind cognitive behavioral therapy is that our thoughts and feelings play a fundamental role in our behavior. Because CBT is usually a short-term treatment option, it is often more affordable than some other therapeutic options. During psychotherapy, a person with some mental illness talks to a licensed and trained mental healthcare professional who helps him or her identify and work through the factors that may be causing their disorder. The therapy may be individual, family or group therapy. The basic aims of treatments for all severe mental disorders, are to reduce symptoms and distress, enhance functioning and prevent relapse.
