Lyme disease, sometimes referred to as Lyme infection, is a bacterial illness, transmitted to humans by the bite of deer ticks (Ixodes ticks) carrying a bacterium known as Borrelia burgdorferi. Lyme disease symptoms include:
• Aches
• Chills
• Fatigue
• Fever
• Headache
• Muscle pain
• Rash, starting with a bull’s-eye appearance that spreads over time
• Stiff neck
• Swelling of the knees and other large joints
• Swollen lymph nodes
Lyme disease affects different areas of the body in varying degrees as it progresses. The site where the tick bites the body is where the bacteria enter through the skin. As the bacteria spread in the skin away from the initial tick bite, the infection causes an expanding reddish rash that is often associated with “flu-like” symptoms.
